LILIAN STEINER – Siren Dance

The Siren calls her onlooker into her alluring arms. Is this an innocent gesture born from desire for true
connection, or a cunning tactic and peacockish display of power? Honesty is slippery and situations
transform before they can be fully grasped. What might appear as truth can so easily reveal itself as
fiction.
In Siren Dance, classicism collides with contemporary visions of truth, magnetism and deception to
question what seduction looks like and for how long disguise can endure.

Recent curiosity and research has manifested as:
Performance-lecture: looking at how spoken language & movement can be performed simultaneously to collide/mix/slip past each other in ways that help to articulate and demonstrate how dance & embodied knowledge is shared between and archived within bodies across time, in ways that either form operating alone cannot
Sculpture: using motion capture technology and 3D design to create sculptures designed by dances
Music composition: playing with how live playing of instruments (e.g. flute, accordion) can be negotiated through & within choreography
I’ve begun research in an ice rink for a performance work, considering the rink as a beehive-like environment with the performers the bees - constructing & maintaining the hive and unfolding relationships within it. I’d love to continue this with dancers & professional figure skaters.
I’d love to create work with people with mixed physical/cognitive abilities. I’m eager to learn from people with experiences of movement different to my own and to celebrate their experiences and qualities.
I’m inspired by specific and/or unusual collaborations & presentation contexts. Open to suggestions/offers.
